UPDATE: 2 People Dead, 3 Injured Along Ontario Highway 400 Due to Multi-Vehicle Collision… See More
Ontario, Canada – A tragic accident on Highway 400 has claimed the lives of two individuals and left three others injured after a violent multi-vehicle collision occurred late Saturday evening. The incident, which took place near the King Road exit north of Toronto, caused major traffic delays and prompted a full-scale emergency response from local authorities.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) confirmed that the crash involved at least four vehicles, including a commercial transport truck, two passenger cars, and a pickup truck. The exact cause of the collision is still under investigation, but early reports indicate that heavy rain and poor visibility may have played a significant role in the chain reaction that unfolded.
According to Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the OPP, the initial impact occurred around 8:15 PM when one of the vehicles reportedly lost control in the northbound lanes. “It appears that a sedan hydroplaned while changing lanes and was struck by a transport truck, triggering a domino effect involving multiple vehicles,” Schmidt said. “It was a chaotic scene upon arrival.”
Two individuals—both occupants of the sedan—were pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Their identities have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. Emergency crews worked quickly to extract other victims from the wreckage, with three people rushed to nearby hospitals with varying degrees of injuries. One victim remains in critical condition.
Footage from the scene shows a mangled wreckage of vehicles strewn across several lanes, with debris and fluids covering the highway. Multiple fire trucks, ambulances, and police cruisers could be seen responding, while traffic was backed up for several kilometers in both directions.
The northbound lanes of Highway 400 were closed for nearly 10 hours as investigators combed the scene and cleanup crews worked to remove debris and damaged vehicles. Traffic has since been reopened, though authorities are urging caution as weather conditions continue to be unstable in the region.
Witnesses described the scene as “horrific,” with several drivers stopping to help before emergency services arrived. “I saw people running from their cars to try to pull others out,” said Mark Levesque, who was driving just two vehicles behind the crash. “There was smoke, people shouting… It’s something I’ll never forget.”
Police are now appealing for dashcam footage from anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the incident. Investigators are also reviewing traffic camera footage and have begun questioning witnesses to piece together the sequence of events that led to the deadly crash.
This marks the latest in a series of serious accidents along Highway 400, one of Ontario’s busiest and most dangerous routes, especially during inclement weather. Officials are once again emphasizing the importance of reducing speed during rain and fog conditions and ensuring that vehicles are properly equipped for slick roads.
As families mourn the sudden and tragic loss of life, communities in the Greater Toronto Area are reminded of the fragility of life on the road. A memorial vigil is already being planned in Vaughan for the victims, as friends and loved ones grapple with the devastating news. The investigation remains ongoing.
